DHMC psychiatrist honored as Mental Health Professional of the Year by NAMI New Hampshire

Jul. 11—LEBANON — Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) psychiatrist Mary F. Brunette, MD, has been named the Mental Health Professional of the Year by the New Hampshire chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The award is given annually to a mental health professional who goes above and beyond for those affected by mental illness and suicide.

"It is a great honor to be selected by NAMI New Hampshire for this award," Brunette said. "I am delighted to work with many wonderful partners across the state to improve the mental health and quality of life for people living with mental illness. My colleagues at DHMC and I look forward to continued collaboration with our partners to increase knowledge about effective treatment, improve the quality of care and reduce stigma surrounding mental health."

In addition to her DHMC appointment, Brunette serves as a Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She attended medical school at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine and completed her residency in psychiatry at DHMC. Since 2006, she has provided clinical leadership of New Hampshire's public mental health system in a 0.3-0.5 FTE role as the Medical Director of the Bureau of Behavioral Health in New Hampshire'sDepartment of Health and Human Services.

"New Hampshire has a treasure in Dr. Brunette," said William C. Torrey, MD, Interim Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at DHMC, who nominated Brunette for her award. "She inspires and leads the state's community mental health medical directors, pulling them together to improve care. New Hampshire benefits from Dr. Brunette's world-class, practical research. She works incredibly hard to apply scientific knowledge and understanding to improve the health and lives of people living with psychiatric illnesses."

"Her leadership as a mental health professional is commendable, particularly in our recent work with First Episode Psychosis/Early Serious Mental Illness.
