2020 has given Michelle Obama ‘low-grade depression’

The New York Daily News - 8/5/2020

If you sometimes feel like 2020 has been the longest year in recorded history, know that you’re not alone--Michelle Obama is in the same boat.

In the latest episode of “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” the former First Lady touched on mental health with former NPR anchor Michele Norris and explained that the current year had been exhausting on a number of levels, leading to Obama “dealing with what she calls some form of “low-grade depression”...”not just because of the quarantine but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting.”

“I don’t think I’m unusual in that,” Obama added.

Obama added that the sheer amount of things happening can sometimes be overwhelming, especially as a person of color.

“I have to say, that waking up to the news, waking up to how this administration has or has not responded, waking up to yet another story of a Black man or Black person somehow being dehumanized or hurt or killed or falsely accused of something, it is exhausting. And, it has led to a weight that I haven’t felt in my life in a while.”

Obama said that these feelings have even interrupted her sleep and exercise schedules but she’s said she’s managing the situation by keeping in touch with friends and appreciating “the small things” like doing a puzzle with her family.

“You have to recognize that you’re in a place, a bad place, in order to get out of it,” she said. “So you kinda have to sit in it for a minute, to know, oh, oh, I’m feeling off. So now I gotta, I gotta feed myself with something better.”
