Group to sponsor New Years Eve celebration

Greensburg Daily News - 12/26/2019

Dec. 24--GREENSBURG -- Youth M.O.V.E. Southeast, a peer group for teens dealing with the challenges caused by mental illness in their lives or in their families, is sponsoring a New Year's Eve celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at First Christian Church in Greensburg.

The free event is open to all, but reservations are requested.

A peer support group that meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Decatur County-Greensburg Public Library, Youth M.O.V.E. Southeast offers socialization opportunities for those who don't have many friends or are friendless for one reason or another.

Offering specific support to individuals 14 to 29, YouthMove affords these often marginalized individuals an opportunity to socialize and even form positive peer groups of their own.

With an ultimate goal of retraining individuals to "fit in," YouthMove also affords them opportunities to give back to their communities, a definite sign of good mental health.

The participation and visual presence of the individual also serves to change the community's perception of those dealing with mental health issues.

Youth M.O.V.E Coordinator Mary Joe Lee told the Daily News about the party.

"The craziness of the holidays, going here, going there non-stop, might be fun for some, but for others, coupled with being on a break from school, it can be a challenging time," she said. "It just throws some kids off-center."

According to Lee, the average Youth M.O.V.E member is between 16 and 21, might be suffering with figuring our how to deal with mental issues like social anxiety, depression, and even sometimes more serious psychoses.

"For these kids, it's just a blessing for them to be in a space where they aren't judged," she said. "So, we are having a party on New Year's Eve for them and their families, to be around people who are either having the same feelings, or have been there at some point."

The First Christian Hospitality Team is preparing hors doeuvres, cookies and other treats.

Games will be provided, and there will be entertainment throughout the entire evening as well as opportunities to sit with friends and chat.

"If they want to, they can just find a corner and be," said Lee.
