No explosives found; driver undergoes mental health evaluation

North Kitsap Herald - 2/24/2018

BANGOR — A 53-year-old man who told Navy personnel at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor that he had an improvised explosive device Feb. 22 was evaluated by a mental health professional after being turned over to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office, spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson reported.

The threat resulted in a closure of the base and street closures within a 3,200-foot radius. As a precaution, authorities advised residents to "shelter in place" and stay away from windows, or evacuate.

"Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians performed a very thorough and detailed search of the SUV," Wilson reported. "No explosives, narcotics or weapons were found. The investigation continues."

Meanwhile, Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor reported later in the day that normal operations have resumed on Naval Base Kitsap, with all gates on NBK locations open to inbound and outbound traffic.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of those impacted by this event," Capt. Alan Schrader, NBK commanding officer, said in a statement released by the base public affairs office. "The safety and security of our people and the surrounding communities is our foremost concern."

Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment 11, Washington State Patrol, Kitsap County Sheriff, the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives provided assistance.

"Our ability to respond quickly and professionally to this incident was due in great part to the ongoing relationships and training we manage with our community partners," Schrader said.
